When you are walking along Park Lane Shoppers Loulevard at Tsim Sha Tsui, have you ever paid much attention to a sculpture showing two hands are held tightly? Have you ever thought of the sculpture having a close relationship with Rotary Club?
Rotary Club of Kowloon West sponsored the making of the sculpture with the theme of Please. It was created in 1989 by a renowned local sculptor Van Lau. Van Lau was born in the Guangdong province of China in 1933. He has been living in Hong Kong since 1960. 15 years ago, he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of National Taiwan Normal University.
Inheriting the spirit of Chinese culture, Van Lau often draws his subject matters from traditional and folk art. Making the sculpture Please, Van Lau had an intention of imitating people who would hold two palms tightly whenever they showed gratitude to others. For instance, relatives hold two palms and greet one another by saying Kung Hei Fat Choy at Chinese New Year.
